Mollie Sugden was born on 21st July 1922.

She is a Yorkshire lass and her early career reflected those roots. She was a regular in Coronation Street, playing a rather snobbish character called Nellie Harvey. Nellie was apparently a bosom buddy of the “Street’s” other main snob, Annie Walker, landlady of the Rovers Return. However for much of the time these two friends spent their time bitching about each other behind their backs.

It was while working on the set of Coronation Street, that she met her lifelong partner William Moore.

Mollie played two very distinct roles within Steptoe, she almost became Harold’s mother-in-law in “And Afterwards At …..” while a few years latter she appears as an actual member of the extended Steptoe family in “Oh, What a Beautiful Mourning”.

Despite her varied acting career she is undoubtedly best known as Mrs Slocombe in the classic 70’s sitcom “Are you Being Served”. She was the feisty older woman in the ladies department of Grace Brothers Store. In an attempt to retain her youth, she would appear with a different colour hair dye on a regular basis. (This caused her children some embarrassment until the BBC agreed to supply her with wigs). Although she uses the title Mrs, it is obvious that she lives on her own, her only company is a much loved cat. Each week the audience would roar with laughter at yet another double entend as Mrs Slocombe makes reference to her pussy.

At the time of writing this short Biography Mollie is approaching her 84th Birthday. She still however appears from time to time on our TV screens in cameo roles. Long may she continue to do that.
