You're thinking of LaWanda Page, she did stand up too, funny woman. haven't heard any of her old comedy albums, but if her performance in "Shakes the Clown" is any indication (impossible to quote here!) she must have been very raunchy.

I've heard LaWanda Page's comedy act and a lot of early Redd Foxx records and they were both absolutely filthy on stage. Very graphic and lewd.

Incidentally, do you remember the episode of Sanford and Son where Fred had the elephant and tried to put on a circus? LaWanda did the Bronze Goddess of Fire act, and that act was one that she actually performed in her younger days near the end of the vaudeville era. She was friends with Redd Foxx even in those days.

Last time I checked a few of her old albums were available on CD. I can imagine her emasculating drunken hecklers with a look lol.
I don't recall that episode, it wasn't till a few years ago that I saw the first 2 series of Sanford since they were first broadcast in the 70's. Unfortunately she doesn't appear often in series I & II.
Watching them work together is quite funny. It's easy to see they knew each other, both of them making extra efforts and steadfastly refusing to corpse

My other half served James Bolam once at Guildford railway station cafe and said he was the rudest, snobbiest, most vile person she'd ever met. Pity I wasn't there to cave his face in. Always hated The Likely Lads anyway. I just find it puerile

A few weeks or so back I accidentally caught an episode of "The Big Bang Theory" and I usually dont like that kind of show, but the first one I saw was really funny and have really gotten in to it since. Worth a look.

Good show but not Steptoe

There's no denying Steptoe was far better than Sanford, but the importance of Sanford and Son, appearing on yank telly at the time it did, cannot be overestimated. As Redd Foxx pointed out, the show was an inestimable contribution towards human understanding, and so soon after the height of the civil rights movement. There were occasions though when original Sanford scripts were truly outstanding, one of those shows appears in the second series and is titled "Lamont Goes African."
Lamont (Harold's counterpart) buys a dashiki, starts speaking Swahili, changes his name, decorates their home with African art of all kinds and only succeeds in embarrassing himself. The parallels with Harold's frustrated attempts to better himself are obvious, while the subject, looking for one's roots, is treated with great respect. A daring script for 1972, predating Frank Zappa's "You Are What You Is" by a decade, and is probably among the most successful, original Sanford episodes

SAD REALLY, can`t understand why he still has that attitude to THE LIKELY LADS at his age, Rodney Bewes in his book has plenty to say about Bolam, he should embrace it as one of the high points of his glorious career, personally I think he`s superb in it and is in most of his performances esp WHEN THE BOAT COMES IN, like many peple i`m baffled as to why he`s like this but then again he dissed his own town of Sunderland too, esp at the premier of the film version of the Likely Lads, each to his own but obviously he`s a snob in real life -shame!

never watched red dwarf, think this is next on my agenda heard nothing but praise from friends, apparently just done a tenth series, so there's plenty of viewing time for me there.
also i've never seen father ted, and only ever seen 2 episodes of hancocks half hour.
you never know till you watch them, i bought the steptoe and son boxset last year not having no realisation how good it was, probably the greatest purchase of my life.
