John Charles Elton Le Mesurier De Somerys Halliley

Postby bob » Wed Apr 02, 2008 6:34 pm

Following on from a recent posting by Graham.

I have just watched the Hancock and Joan programme. I noticed the film was based on a book by Joan LeMesurier, does anybody know how accurately it reflected the book.

For me the most interesting character of all is John LeMesurier. I have heard a number of interesting / funny stories about him but the way ha conducted himself through what must have been a really painful experience is extraordinary.

I would like to read a bit more about him, but everything seems out of print. Any recommendations or help would be welcome.

I noticed his wikipedia entry lists his full name as “John Charles Elton Le Mesurier De Somerys Halliley”…… oh how awfully nice!

I would love to have met John.
He seemed like such a lovely and understanding gent.
He was also married to Hattie Jaques which must have been lovely,as she was such a caring woman.

John was so considerate that when he divorced Hattie (who was having an affair with a younger man....). He took the blame trying to ensure her career wasn't harmed...

BTW the excellent Fantabulosa (Kenneth Williams Story), is on BBC4 tonight at 10pm....
