Election night...

Postby PhilGlass » Thu May 06, 2010 10:47 pm

Either way we're screwed, so I am spending the Election night Steptoe style...

MY OLD MAN'S A TORY followed by TEA FOR TWO...

THAT'S what politics is all about... a bucket of whitewash over the bog door... if Dimbleby did that it would make the whole night a lot more interesting...

Such was the power of Steptoe that Harold Wilson asked for Steptoe to be cancelled for Election Week as he thought people may stay at home watching Steptoe instead of voting..

I say.. Albert Steptoe for Prime Minister... that's my kind of Britain!!

Hi Phil

Do you know that somebody on wikipedia edited that fact out, their reasoning that Harold Wilson wasn't Prime minister at the time. Obviously they don't understand opposition.

Poor Harold would have been devistated at the result, remember jesus was a socialist

Hi Bob

I didn't know that, thanks for that, but I have had Steptoe info deleted from Wikipedia before, or fakeipedia as I call it.

Lol yes Harold would have been gutted - so would Harry, he was a personal friend of Harold Wilson's after all and appeared in a Party Political Broadcast for the labour party in 1969 as Harold Steptoe.

I always think it's a shame Steptoe didn't carry on after 79. I could imagine the Thatcher arguments - 'If you're gonna elect a bird at least elect a tasty one'. And then Albert defending her. A missed opportunity...

Yesterday I was looking at the excellent write up of the Buckingham Palace sketch on here and thought the 'hung parliament' bit and the comments about the opening of parliament were all of a sudden very topical again!!

Why did I not think of this, Phil?

For once an election of which I did not participate in.

Have you seen the latest Cameron cuts? Christ, this looks set to be a tenure that makes Maggie's look angelic in comparison. I do not wish to sound thuggish but I predict 'blood on the streets' in a few years if this vulture carries on the way he's going.

More cuts than the Steptoe christmas specials DVD!!!

Still, at least this coalition gives the Liberal Hypocrits something to do lol...

I have wondered about these STEPTOE episodes how much truth the actors felt behind them - I dont know what Wilfrid's political views were, but Harry was a supporter of Labour, and even appeared as Harold Steptoe in a Party Policitcal Broadcast. If Wilfrid was a tory (I dont know if he was or not) then it must have been great fun for them to film these episodes, with a little bit of personal fun in the arguments!!

I have been asked several times why I think Harry got the OBE and Wilfrid didnt... although Harry truly deserved it (as did Wilfrid), he no doubt got it because of his work in promoting the Labour Party (who were in power when he got it).

I wonder if Galton and Simpson knew of this, although Harold Steptoe would ALWAYS have been labour. Albert probably was, but just liked to get on Harold's bristols!!

That's an interesting point. It would be nice to know if there was a bit of mirthful argy-bargy on the set.
