Armchair Theatre " The Hothouse" (Digitally Cleaned)

Postby snodge » Fri Apr 06, 2018 9:01 am

I'd though I'd post this Armchair Theatre episode called " The Hothouse (1964) starring Harry H Corbett and Dame Diana Rigg

This took me around 2 months to clean because of the severe dirt and scratches and had to be done frame by frame
all 64000 of the buggers :)

Its a lovely play and there's some hilarious banter between a young Harry and Diana about large marrows and other phallic symbols
its a little risque for 1964!

Compared to the DVD release and upscaled Blu-ray you've done a great job removing all of the picture noise. And while a slight lack of contrast and faces sometimes looking a little waxy and lacking detail, the 50fps framerate makes for a very fluid watch. I applaud your perseverance with this!

Thanks for the feedback :)

On the blu-ray version i have the Hothouse isn't upscaled but standard 720x576

I can't imagine an upscale would be possible given the amount of dirt and damage

as the dirt would just be more apparent.

Re The lack of contrast and waxy faces...Yes i agree but depending on how noisy the picture is its hard to strike a balance
and the low res DVD source isn't ideal.

You're right, the Blu-ray is regular SD, apologies for my error there. All things considered you did a great job in cleaning up this so many thanks.

Thanks Crunchie -its much appreciated :)

When i first heard this Armchair episode was a extra on the blu-ray i was hoping they might have re-scanned a 16mm print
but alas its just SD, But they could have made the bit-rate the maximum allowed for the Blu-ray spec though.

I just love this Play and plan to have another go after gaining a few more tricks since i first did this restore job,
I think the "Hothouse" deserves this attention to make it as presentable as possible.

Cheers

That’s an excellent snapshot Snodge, speaks volumes as do your 64,000 frame by frame labours, wow :).
Harry looks quite dapper with the moustache, continental. With that look, he could’ve been cast in Carry On Abroad, perhaps as the desperately exuberant aphrodisiac salesman. Or maybe as the Spanish police chief with Diana Rigg in her rubber Avengers catsuit as his enforcer. If Rigg had prior commitments, they might’ve brought in Rachel Welch in her "Magic Christian" Viking gear*. Which brings to mind that hilarious scene in “Revenge of the Pink Panther” where similarly fetish attired Valerie Leon cracks her whip on Peter Sellers’ backside .
Oh dear, we’re seeing a pattern here :o.
*A costume that undoubtedly inspired Carrie Fisher’s in “Return of the Jedi” but don’t look to Lucasfilm
cum Disney Corp to admit it. Interesting and important to note, are the role reversals in Lucas "films".
Whereas the alluring characters played by Rigg, Welch and Leon are strong, fiercely independent women...
...in Lucas' cardboard-dialog universe, Fisher is portrayed as a slave with a chain around her neck .

thanks Doy.. Enjoyable post.... could you write some more Steptoe reviews (here on the site) ?

I said it once before..but you do have a way with words :)

I'm hopeful Pixel surgeon will take up the mantle and perform a restoration of the hothouse using his special brew

I'm now working on " The Bath" Episode and plan to cram in the lost audio segment,

There's a abrupt cut @ 28.46 min and this is where the lost audio starts from.

I'll see how it pans out! (pun intended).

What's above, is already VidFIRE(D), as it's one of several test renders I've been running...

More manual work to do, before it's ready, though - so please near with me...

Didn't gravely old Rod say the first cut is the deepest? :D

Or... Losing my religon aka REM... perhaps they had a reverse operation commonly know as a epispasm?

Which reminds me of that old joke... A man got a job circumcising elephants, When asked how the job was going he said there were a lot of drawbacks but the tips were enormous :D
