I'm doing them all - well, all those that are on the DVD box set - I'm around half way through...

If there's enough interest, then I may be persuaded to post the links to the others...

Remember...:

If you're not going to watch this back on a proper CRT TV (remember those...), then use the following media player and settings:

VLC media player is an ideal candidate, if you plan to watch this back on an LCD or LED flat screen computer monitor.

Available here for Windows: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

Or here for Mac OS X: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

Once installed, and the video is playing back, hit Pause, then go up to the Menu > Video and change the following two default settings:

1. Video > Deinterlace > On
2. Video > Deinterlace mode > Linear or Yadif (2x)

Once those are set, then hit Play...

Enjoy...

Nice attempt there Alex and i notice its retained the small details very well, I just joined and am into video restoration also and I want to upload a few of my vid-fired Steptoe episodes and wonder if i need permission from the site owners ?

Good to meet like- minded restorers on here :)

Thanks for the kind words. it would be great to see what you have vidfired as tbh there aren't many people around that can vidfire and the one person i found who can vidfire gave or offered me NO help in learning how to vidfire so i learn't the process myself.pity some people
are like that...but thanks again for the kind words...maybe we can share our techniques's ?

It's rather ironic - look at it like this...

You've leaned a lot more from having to work out the techniques for yourself (I'd imagine, a lot more satisfying), rather than just being told how it's done/how to do it... (I never had it handed to me on a plate, either...)

Sure you are pretty proud of yourself - as indeed, you should be...

Welcome to the club!

Have a go at the file to be found at the link below (only there for 7 days, as it's not a paid for account - it's their FREE service...)

There's a lot more wrong with it, then just missing the video-look (VidFIRE), as you'll see, if you watch it all the way through, before attempting it... It'll be a challenge, should you attempt it...

I've already restored it, but I would be interested to see, what you get, out at the other end of your own processes...

Thanks for the link pixel surgeon, I see its got the dreaded scanlines throughtout -pretty much like the Blood Donor episode
I have a few techniques I`ve developed for trying to make them less visible but its always a compromise as you are aware.
And whats the deal with the corners of the frames?

I would love to see what Alex can do with it, I might attempt it but at the moment I`m working on Steptoe`s `Homes fit for Heroes` and trying to deal with those horrible black vertical scratches-A real nightmare as you can appreciate :)

Dare I say, those dreaded scanlines, are not really the main problem with this particular episode. Please do try and watch the whole episode all the way through, if you can...

Check this small clip...:

video fault - there are several of these throughout

https://we.tl/IleVZiFBEN

Hancock's The Blood Donor is far worse - as you know... Those lines are twice the size - and I'm sure you already know, what happens when you try and reduce them... There's always a compromise to be made - especially when working on a 1GB mpeg file, taken off a commercially available DVD...

As for the corners of the frame... Other than a crop, which I wouldn't really recommend - certainly not if you'll be watching your restoration back on a 4:3 ratio CRT (as they will be lost in the overscan, pretty much...).

Yes, I've left Homes Fit for Heroes, for now... Way too much manual work needed, that I don't have the time for...

Tramlines can be a nightmare, mostly... I certainly hate them...

I'll be interested to see how your restoration turns out, if you can bare to stick with it, right till the very end...

Back in the early days, I spent over a year restoring something that was very dear to me (it was something Hancock related...).

Several years later, I did it again, from scratch, and got a slightly better result, in less than half a day!

I had a quick go at seeing what could be done with that clip
https://www.mediafire.com/file/acrz9r54 ... %20Fix.mp4

I did a experiment trying to replace the missing left corner,i could make it more seamless if i spent time on it

the video faults can be made less visible but it needs frame-by frame work which eats time.

Here's a recent old show i worked on that had endless video faults,Its had around 5 frazzled frames around a good one
I was cloning like mad and it took forever and i nearly gave up!

That's very impressive... Well done...

Here's 4 minutes odd, from my fully restored episode of the same.

There's a sample file, too, just in case anyone wants to compare...

Yes, I know that series well... Done the whole series...

Unfortunately, I can't download files from MEGA.

Any chance of re-uploading to WeTransfer, as I'd like to see what you've done. It's free, and you don't need an account.

Thanks Pixel surgeon for your kind words on my work.. i appreciate it :)

I tried not to crop and zoom as resizing tends to softens the video even more I find.

I like your restoration of that episode and the video look you got is great.

Thanks for your kind words...

Indeed, cropping can cause softening of the image... But as with these things/restorations, you pretty much always need to add a bit of sharpening, so pretty much easily cured... No cropping though, as I said before, if it's going to be watched back on a CRT...

Downloading your file...
