51 Years Today !

Postby Archie » Sat Jan 05, 2013 6:41 pm

I saw on the homepage that 'The Offer' the play that started the whole Steptoe series was broadcast on 5 January 1962 :o

Raise a glass tonight, I've got a wee bit of sherry left over from Christmas :D

Some might argue Steptoe has aged better than the Stones
Happy Birthday Steptoe :)

51 years is a staggering time. The world has changed in many ways yet the scripts are as relevant today than they were then, in some cases even more so. In 49 years time Steptoe will still be going strong and celebrating its 100th birthday.

I'll agree with that Phil but u have to admire the Stones for still doing it after all this time. Quite miraculous really

No I don't lol. I assume you meant me, not Phil. Like most people I've got Stones albums and a lot of their old songs still rock, but when a group once touted as the greatest rock and roll band in the world starts getting played in lifts and shopping malls...it's probably time to pack it in lol. No offense mind, there's no accounting for taste and there's far too much ageism in rock, but these guys must be in their seventies. A 70 year old Jagger running and hopping about the stage...is that entertaining? It's just dangerous! Old people don't heal well! He could be one gyration away from a fractured hip
Steptoe manages to be truly timeless though :)

As somebody who went to see the Stones, last November I can tell they are still the greatest Rock and Roll band on the planet.

Doom and Gloom - just an awesome single - they still rock !!!

Battle of the bands! lol
Sorry Bob, was just having a laugh. Anyway, I thought you saw Watts' jazz combo? Now that is telling, must've reached a certain age if I use terms like "combo" lol
Watched Gimme Shelter and the Exile on Main Street tour again and it's true, their compositions are excellent, archetypal rock.
The band I've seen most often must be The Dickies, literally dozens of shows, great fun. Really regret not having seen The Cramps, but now that Lux Interior is gone, oh well.
Once again, no accounting for taste, but the all time best bands must be jazz orchestras. Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, far too many to list. The be-bops, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, list goes on and on. Music that makes your Gran snap her fingers lol. Hep!
Back on topic, speaking of birthdays, it's nearly 7 years now isn't it.
Happy Birthday to this website, Cheers Bob :)

My dad was 9 when Steptoe started and now its my 10-year old son's favourite programme. Just goes to show the old ones r the best ones. Truly timeless magnificence. That goes for the Stones too

I couldn’t agree more, if it is good, it is timeless.

When Steptoe first came out on VHS, I went and bought all FOUR !! of them. I had much pleasure coming home from work one evening and finding my 6 year old daughter watching them in preference to the numerous Disney videos she had acquired.

Good girl – I’m still proud !!!

As for Dirty Old Yank – The Dickies – that really takes me back – I remember them doing a rather unusual version of “Silent Night” or is that another bunch of p***s, - sorry I meant Dickies !!!

That's them! They also did punk versions of "Nights in White Satin", "Paranoid" and the theme from "Gigantor" lol.
Very funny band, always good fun. They may still be doing annual European tours, they're very popular there :)
Edit: They toured UK last year with The Damned.
