Jonathan Winters RIP

Postby Dirty Old Yank » Sun Apr 14, 2013 8:30 pm

This Thursday past, one of the finest and funniest, craziest and most creative comedians ever, passed on.
Jonathan Winters was without a doubt a comedy genius. Beloved by millions, some will recognize him as the petrol station destroying lorry driver from "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (1963). Others will remember him from the telly series "Mork and Mindy" (starring one of his many admirers/proteges, Robin Williams). Older yanks might recall his drag act 'Maude Frickert' or his brilliant appearances on NBC's "The Tonight Show" hosted by Parr/Carson. An accomplished painter and author, Winters' career was guided by his humanity, his compassion, but primarily by his extraordinary gift for satire in all it's forms. Nobody, not even the best vaudevillians, could keep pace with his ad libs.
RIP Johnny

His scene with Phil Silvers is a classic. A talented man.

Ah Phil Silvers his one liners, his facial expressions are a class above many.

Hey, wait a minute! I can't cross here. You said the main road. This is Niagara Falls. Alright, look. You're a little boy. You wanna be a big boy? Which way to the main road?

Another favorite bit from Mad Mad World...Winters says to Milton Berle,
"Listen, anything you'd have to say about your mother-in-law (Ethel Merman) you don't have to explain to me, you know what I mean? It's like if she were a star of a real crummy horror movie, I'd believe it!" :D

Here's an especially funny clip of one of his many appearances on Jack Parr's "Tonight" show.
Entirely ad libbed live television, Parr never knew what Johnny was gonna do. No one could, he was so unpredictable and inventive :o
