Why do the BBC make cuts in DVD collections ?

Postby Archie » Sun Feb 10, 2008 7:33 pm

I belive the Steptoe box set contains a few cuts thankfully the individual series disks have escaped cuts.
The Christmas special had a slight cut when Harold was in the travel agent though :(

I recently bought the 'Some Mothers Do Ave Em' box set and it contains a number of cuts

Why do the Beeb do this and who decides where to make the cuts :?:

I know the answer to this - there are several reasons...

One of the biggest victims was the Only Fools and Horses set - if there is, say, background music, or any reference, symbol etc which requires a copyright to be paid - it is very easy to get permission to use this stuff for a tv broadcast, but for a dvd release it is very complicated - how many copies will they sell? What royalty share do they get for just a second of their copyright logo or reference or music?... So the bbc take the easy option and cut it. Home releases have always caused problems for such as there is no definitive rule or industry standard.

Thats the main reason... other than that, the bbc are a bunch of cowboys!

Yes, Only Fools was a major victim. The episode Mother Natures Son is a case in point, in the original, The Beatles Money was played in the background in the Brighton scene, but for the DVD they had to change it. Worst affected was Yuppie Love, the scene where rodney first asked Cassandra to dance was cut  Again, the answer might well be the music, the scene was set in a disco :?:
