All Above Board in Paperback

Postby Dirty Old Yank » Tue Feb 28, 2012 12:29 pm

W. H. Allen, publisher of Wilfrid Brambell's long out of print autobiography "All Above Board" has been relaunched by Ebury Publishing:
http://www.eburypublishing.co.uk/whallen.asp

March 22 marks the centenary of Wilfrid's birth, and a paperback edition of All Above Board is long overdue.

Could the Appreciation Society organize a campaign/petition to have Wilf's only book reprinted?
A campaign that could be submitted to Ebury, which in turn could contact the copyright holder (Wilf's partner.)

We've seen stage productions of "Murder At Oil Drum Lane" and the recent publications of "When Harry Met Sheila" and "Ray Galton and Alan Simpson: The Masters of Sitcom," both critically acclaimed volumes.
Susanna Corbett's eagerly anticipated biography "Harry H. Corbett: The Front Legs of the Cow" will be published March 1st.
And we've seen inflammatory 'documentaries' such as "The Curse of Steptoe" and "When Steptoe Met Son."
All this and more while repeats of Steptoe and Son occur on a regular basis in the UK and have done for half a century, unparalleled longevity for a sitcom.

With all the recent publicity and continued, thoroughly documented popularity of Steptoe, now would be the time to reprint All Above Board in paperback. Mass market, trade, limited edition, it doesn't matter...they'll sell :)

That is a good idea DOY.

Why not start a poll on the forum so people can cast their vote to have it published.

I can put a add on the front page encouraging people to add their vote.

On a relatred issue, I received a communication from someone saying that a Bio of Willy is being written. He had a Manacherster City email address, so I am not sure if he is writting it or knows someone who is.

Hi Bob
Haven't had the opportunity to read it yet, but at long last have a copy of All Above Board :D Very pleased indeed.
I still support a paperback edition though and can't imagine why anyone wouldn't, though I've been told some oppose Wilf's book in paperback because it might reduce the value of their cloth "collectors" editions.
Actually, a wider audience and greater interest in Steptoe would increase demand for and value of collectors items (there's a totter talking 8))
Have you been able to verify if a biography of Wilfrid is being written? If so, an affordable edition of All Above Board would make a nice tie-in.
