It hurts my soul to say, but sadly to announce that the great writer and co-father of Steptoe & Son, Alan Simpson, has passed away aged 87 after a long illness. RIP Alan, thanks for all the laughs. :|

Dare I say, I met him several times... I have very fond memories of those occasions, that I will cherish forever.

Of course, he has left us with so much, he will never be forgotten...

The writers, for me, have always been what made the shows... The actors, how ever great, just read the words...

RIP, Alan.

It would be nice if the website sent a floral tribute at the appropriate time.

If you would like to contribute please PM me and I will send you details of where to send contributions.

Just doing a tribute on main page.

Thanks Bob

Most sincere condolences to Alan’s family, and friends.
And to admirers of what he and Ray achieved: the epitome of hilarious, and acutely compassionate sitcoms.
Needs not saying that Steptoe has had an incredibly profound and inestimably positive influence upon us all.
Cheers Alan so very much, you and Ray changed all our lives forever, and so much for the better.
Wishing you clear weather, and smooth sailing.

Saddened but even more thankful for Alan's legacy of true class alongside writing comrade Ray which will live forever.
Thinking of Ray, a man who may well have known Alan better than his own family.

Excuse my brief first post. I heard the news on the radio in the car on my way to work this afternoon. As soon as I heard "The comedy writer Alan Simpson..." I had to pull over.

One of the nicest men I ever met and with Ray he changed the world and gave it a sense of humour. Very sadly missed.

Excellent tribute Bob.

Very sad news. I'll always be a fan of his wonderful writing for Hancock and Steptoe.

I also enjoyed listening to his interviews and he was a great talker about comedy.

RIP Alan.
