Wilfrid Brambell and The Riddle of The 39 Steps...

Postby PhilGlass » Fri Aug 07, 2009 4:30 pm

Many websites and sources claim Wilf was an extra in The 39 Steps (Hitchcock's 1935 version - this would have been his very first performance), some say he wasn't... I believe I have an answer...

Firstly, this used to be on the IMDB in his filmography and has since been removed. There is a 'Crippin lookalike' character who some say is Wilf others say it isn't. As it is a speaking part I am sure Wilf would have remebered it, but fails to recollect it in 'All Above Board'..

However, I believe I have found him elsewhere as an extra in the film (which an actor would not mention as their debut if they were just on for a few seconds).

What do you think? Is the man on the left walking past the bus a young Wilfrid Brambell?? I'd love to know your thoughts..

Def looks like him to me, same sort of size and physique as wilf.

It certainly looks like him.

John Laurie - Fraser in Dads Army played the Farmer in the movie, maybe this is where people are getting confused :?

The confusion comes because originally Wilf was rumoured to have had a small speaking part at the beginning as there is a bloke who looks and sounds like Albert Steptoe, but way too old to be Wilf at the time...

It's true that Wilf says his first movie role was in ODD MAN OUT, but its possible he was saving a little dignity, is 3 seconds really your movie debut? He was also drinking 2 bottles of gin a day at the time he wrote the book...

It's most likely it isn't him, but it's just interesting to see what people think!
