For me it is "The Bird".

I pick that one because I think it is the best study of the characters of the whole saga. And it's dark. There is the undertone of violence when Harold was a child, something that comedy did NOT talk about. And the ending shows Albert is just nasty. Yet we still love him!!

I'd say the Bird, I used to listen to the soundtrack over and over when I was a kid and it was my introduction to Steptoe. I can still recite massive chunks of it, complete with all the inflections, like "Every time he puts his nose in the nosebag to take a mouthful it slips down and wallops his eeearrrzz" and "evaporated mullk".
Mind you, the Holiday comes a very close second, if only for the gloriously bleak final shots of Harold and Albert on holiday - that's what a lot of my experiences of British holiday resorts are like, freezing cold, deserted promenades and silly hats!
I'd say the poorest episode of the first series is the Economist, nobody would be that stupid!

The Piano, I grew up watching that episode over and over when I couldn’t get other episodes on tape or the lousy TV stations wouldn’t play Steptoe and Son.

Difficult choice...but perhaps "Pot Black" or "A Star is BoRn"...with honorable mentions for "Upstairs, Downstairs", "Heating Machines", "Men of Letters" and "porn Yesterday".

But in truth I cherish them all.

All of my favorite episodes, in chronological order.

65 Today
The Bonds That Bind Us
The Siege of Steptoe Street
My Old Man's a Tory
Any Old Iron
Men of Property
The Three Feathers
Men of Letters
Oh What a Beautiful Mourning
Live Now, P.A.Y.E. Later
Divided We Stand
The Desperate Hours
Upstairs, Downstairs

Season 1 actually doesn't do much for me. By the time I got through the first season for the first time, I almost didn't want to watch the rest.
I thought we'd nick a wreath off one of the graves as we went in.

The Holiday.

It also has Colin Gordon in it as the Doctor before he became a Tax Inspector in Live Now, PAYE Later.
