Just heard another more complete version of THE BIRD radio ep than I previously had, sounded miles better too on a digi station, time to replace those old cassette copies methinks!

It mentioned that last nights ep of THE STEPMOTHER was a found off air recording, guess this is one reason it has never been released commercially.

I think the BBC don't see any commercial appeal in releasing them. They could release an off-air recording now, but yes, that's why it wasn't released before as they didn't have it. A CD box set would be good but I don't think we should hold our breath. I'd rather them campaign to find the colour episodes first.

The Stepmother is being broadcast again today at 14:00, followed by the radio episode of the Dad's Army episode Absent Friends.7
I did not realise that the televison episode of Absent Friends was not broadcast on tv from 1970 until last saturday evening, due to references to the IRA.
The Economist is on Rdio 4 extra this monday at 08:30 & 12:30 & 19:30

Just listened to the Down Under episode. Brilliant.

Steptoe and Son down under?

That was not actually a radio episode, but an audio recording of the stage show they did in Australia, recorded for an LP record, not for broadcast.

In Susannah's book she states that in 1982 they were planning to revive the stage show for another tour. This agrees with an obituary from The News of The World at the time which said they were going to return to the stage. Who knows what it may have led to.

"Down Under" is not everyone's cup of tea, but it does have its merits.

My mistake Phil. You're right it has it's merits both within the Steptoe mythology and as a stand-alone work.

They were planning to revive the show in '82, it would be interesting to know if they were using the same script or something new...

I'm not so sure... I think the Kenco ad shows Harry was becoming too old to play the part... it was Benny Hill syndrome... when Hill became a grey haired old man he went from being a bit cheeky to being a dirty old pervert... Harold in his 50's may have been too unbelievable. However, when H. died one reporter who commented that they were due to do a cabaret show says Harry talked "wistfully" about the posibility of episodes for 1983. Galton and Simpson were never asked to write more Steptoe. I think it was best to end it when they did.

I often wonder what it would have been like had they made more episodes. It probably would have descended into parody unfortunately
