Ray Galton and Alan Simpson proved there writing genius was not limited to Tony Hancock when they wrote a series of half hour one off shows called "Comedy play house". Episode Four was called "The offer", and was so successful it was given a series of it's own... Steptoe and son. Based around the lives of two rag and bone men, the story is so funny it's almost tragic. Harold was always trying to break free from the grip of his father but could never quite make it. The show ran from 1962 to 1965 when it was decided to put it to rest. A few years later an opportunity to resurrect the show under the working title of" The return of Steptoe and son" but Galton and Simpson's thought that the show may not work as well if it lost some of the grit that black and white television gave it. However they gave it a try and it became one of the most popular BBC sitcoms of all time and remains a classic masterpiece to this day.
