It has become the fashion lately (especially on commercial television) to run programmes that feature a range of tv clips, interspersed with "celebrity" comments about those clips. They tend to go under titles claiming them to be The Worlds Best Comedy Shows, or Britain's Most Loved Actors etc etc.

The producers claim that somehow we have voted and the programme is a countdown of how we have voted.

This voting and the results they produce are somewhat spurious as a huge degree of inconsistency exists between programmes. For example Harold Steptoe came 30th in the WORLDS funniest comedy characters, beating Leonard Rossitter’s “Rigsby” by a couple of places. When it came to just Britain’s favourite comedy character Harold had to share 30th place with Albert. Rigsby however was a good few places in front of them.

Ultimately the order of these shows is somewhat meaningless as it is the opportunity for us to indulge in a few hours of nostalgia we enjoy as well as the surprise of what’s next in the list.

The Worlds Greatest Comedy Characters

This compilation sees Harold Steptoe voted as the "World's funniest comedy character. Albert doesn't appear anywhere in the list !!

As usual the list is dominated by current artistes such as Catherine Tate, Steve Coogan and crowd from The Fast Show.

No allowance seems to be made for the fact that Harry (and others) gave over 50 30 minute dramatic performances as his character, while some of the other characters, only feature for no more than 10 minutes as part of a sketch show. These 10 minute sketches are usually full of the same joke and catch phrase.

The Winner : Basil Fawlty

Britain's Funniest Comedy Characters

Albert and Harold Share 30th spot.

In an attempt to ensure that that great british institution Monty Python is included they are featured at 28 under the guise of "The Pepperpots" !!! No I didn't know who they were either. Apparently they are the shrill old women so well played by all the Python's (especially Terry Jones in my view).

The Winner : No idea but if somebody wants to tell me I will publish it.
