Those Magnificent Men and Their Heating Machines

  First Broadcast : 18th October 1965

This remains my favourite episode from the 60's batch of stories and I don't really know why!

Maybe it was because it was the last of those episodes that I tracked down in poor quality before the recovery of A Box in Town and the releases onto VHS, I was both fascinated by the information that I had aquired about this episode and my desperation in seeing it.

When I finally got hold of a very poor copy it was incredibly difficult to see, but that didn't matter, I had got it, a copy of the episode that I most wanted to see, that was all that mattered.

Brambell and Corbett were as superb as ever they were and I was hoping that for once Harold's schemes would actually workout as the character put so much effort into installing the central heating just for his dad, even though he wasn't up to the job the thought was there and made me realise that Harold loves is dad very much, even though he is constantly put down by his father he still tries to make him as comfortable as possible.

True personalities and true characters, ones that I feel I know and love. This special episode is perfect in every aspect and is the one that I would chose to represent Steptoe and Son in the 1960's and the comic genius of such actors as the two leads and of the two writers whose work will never be equalled.

If ever you want to watch just one 60's episode then do your self a favour and choose Those Magnificent Men and Their Heating Machines because the clue to how brilliant it is is in the title itself. MAGNIFICENT!!!!!!!!!

This episode shows Harold aquiring some radiators off the round, and the ensuing attempts to install central heating in the house end with hilarious results.

Firstly all the pipes are showing instead of being under the floor, much to Alberts disgust, then when the boiler is finally lit , the radiators all start moving and banging.

Albert starts panicking and rushes to turn it off but its too late........

This episode is hilarious from start to finish, a true classic,
